NSFW, But No Porno: OpenAI | Deepfake Watch

Industry leader OpenAI says they’re exploring how to generate NSFW content like “erotica” responsibly, but says no to pornography.
Weeks into the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission gave a notice to all political parties to take down deepfakes within 3 hours from being notified. Meanwhile, the prime minister gives conflicting takes on the technology.

“Remove deepfakes within 3 hours”
The Election Commission sent a letter to all political parties in India to take down deepfakes from their social media handles within 3 hours from being notified.
“The use of such manipulated, distorted, edited content on social media platforms has the potential to wrongfully sway voter opinions, deepen societal divisions, and erode trust in electioneering process by attacking laid out instrumentalities of the electoral steps in terms of means and material,” the poll body said in the letter.
Reporting on the notice for Hindustan Times, Aditi Agrawal points out the lack of clarity in the advisory around what is a ‘deepfake’, as opposed to ‘cheapfakes’ or ‘shallow fakes’.
Do misleading videos made using editing tools also count? What about satire? And what about real videos being reported as deepfakes? Does the ECI have the tools to detect authentic media from the synthetic types? We are yet to find out.
Prime Minister’s deepfake dilemma
Prime Minister Narendra Modi can’t seem to make up his mind on deepfakes. After falsely labeling an edited video of Home Minister Amit Shah as a deepfake during a rally last month, he shared a video on X, where he can be seen dancing on stage. “Like all of you, I also enjoyed seeing myself dance. 😀😀😀 Such creativity in peak poll season is truly a delight!,” he wrote, adding the hashtag #PollHumour.
The video may not seem very realistic, but it is undoubtedly a deepfake - the watermark at the bottom right makes it clear that the generative AI tool Viggle was used to create Modi’s likeness. This little prop-up by the prime minister was a counter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposing reaction to a very similar video of her dancing on stage, where she got Kolkata Police to take a sterner action against the user who posted it.
Modi then reiterated his concerns around deepfakes while speaking to Times Now’s Navika Kumar and Sushant Sinha, citing how Amitabh Bachchan could not sleep at night, after he found his voice being cloned.
The mixed reactions by the prime minister to AI-generated content might seem a bit confusing, especially in the backdrop of the EC advisory.
Explicit content, but no porno, says OpenAI
OpenAI published a Model Spec on Monday - an extensive document that reveals a little on how their models are trained to respond to certain types of prompts.
The little detail that caught everyone’s attention was a note expressing the company’s intention to “exploring whether OpenAI can responsibly provide the ability to generate NSFW content in age-appropriate contexts through the API and ChatGPT”.
According to the Model Spec, NSFW content - an acronym for Not Safe For Work - refers to “content that would not be appropriate in a conversation in a professional setting, which may include erotica, extreme gore, slurs, and unsolicited profanity.” So while OpenAI tools currently do not generate such content, it may in the future.
After intense speculation on whether this means OpenAI is soon going to provide pornographic outputs, the company told media outlets, "We have no intention to create AI-generated pornography. We have strong safeguards in our products to prevent deepfakes, which are unacceptable, and we prioritize protecting children.”
Those Met Gala deepfakes
The Met Gala just took place in New York, and as usual, social media was filled with images of celebrities wearing absurd outfits. Some of them, it turns out, weren’t real at all.
Images of Rihanna and Katy Perry at the event filled the internet, despite neither of them having attended it at all. Deepfakes of Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa from the Met Gala are also viral.
