Elon Musk is threatening to ban Apple devices at his companies, after the tech giant announced a partnership with OpenAI to unveil Apple Intelligence, integrating GPT-4o into its iOS.

Musk may rant about a lot of rubbish, but his concerns about this new partnership are shared by many others. Hailed for long as a haven for privacy enthusiasts, how does a partnership with OpenAI bode for Apple’s promises?

The Forbidden Fruit Of User Data

There are consequences to Apple’s actions, and privacy-minded Apple fans should ask a few questions.

While the company may have built a reputation for securing user data from prying eyes, OpenAI is a different case altogether.

They’re facing allegations of having stolen the voice of Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson to build the now-recalled voice assistant Sky, which if true, would be a creepy attempt at replicating the sci-fi masterpiece ‘Her’, where the protagonist falls in love with an AI assistant voiced by Scarlett Johansson herself.

Tech bro and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman denied that Sky had Scarlett’s voice, although a tweet by him sort of suggested otherwise. An AI lab analysis by Arizona State University researchers found that Sky’s voice “bears a striking resemblance” to Scarlett’s.

According to an article by NPR, who requested forensic voice experts at ASU’s speech lab to compare the two voices, Johansson’s voice was found to be more similar to Sky “than 98% of the other actresses”.

This is not the first allegation of wrongful data use faced by OpenAI - news publication New York Times, and authors George R. R. Martin, John Grisham, Michael Connelly and many others have sued the company for unlawful use of their work to train its GPT models.

To quell these concerns, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook promised “a new standard for privacy in AI”.

According to a report by Hera Rizwan for BOOM, “Apple assures that GPT4o-driven Siri and other native apps on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia will request permission each time before sharing questions, photos, documents, presentations, or PDFs. Users will also have the option to access ChatGPT without creating an account.”

However, as Hera points out, “Apple's foray into AI, aided by OpenAI, remains marred with concern.”

The concern stems from lack of transparency by AI companies on how their tools are built, as their data collection efforts are kept obscure in the race to compete for the “projected $1.3 trillion market for chatbots and other AI technologies by 2032”.

Apple can try to conciliate its concerned user base, but as long as OpenAI remains opaque on how it is training its GPT models, these concerns are not going to disappear. For one rotten Apple can spoil the whole barrel.
