US Using AI to Revoke Visas Of 'Pro-Hamas' Students
Are you a foreign student studying in the United States? Did you in the past 17 months decide to join in a sit-down or protest in favour of Palestine (or simply against Israel’s indiscriminate AI-driven killer rampage across Gaza)?
Turns out, an AI will be used to find you, and axe your visa.
A recent report by Axios reveals that the US Department of State—led by Marco Rubio—is bringing in an AI system to identify “pro-Hamas” sympathisers among foreign nationals, and revoke their visas.
Rubio had clarified to the media that he intends to exercise the authority granted by the Immigration Nationality Act of 1952 to revoke visas of foreign nationals posing a threat to the US.
The Axios report also highlights the major issue with this drive - most US voters do not distinguish between pro-Palestine protests, and pro-Hamas protests.
The report, however, does not clarify the amount of human intervention in the revocation process. It is possible that a large number of students could have their studies upended by an AI system.
Researchers Find Flaws With Current Deepfake Detection
A collaborative study by Australian government agency Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, and South Korea’s Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), studied 16 top deepfake detection models, and found “none could reliably identify real-world deepfakes.”
The study reveals how most detection models are falling behind the rapid evolution of deepfake creation tools, and struggle to detect deepfakes that fall outside their training data.

Updates On AI Regulations
The State of Kentucky in the US passed a new law that would regulate the government’s use of AI.
The law, titled Senate Bill 4, requires state agencies to disclose the use of AI, and appoints an oversight committee to formulate guidelines and standards for the use of AI by the state government.
